Tip by Tim Joyce in Columbia, PA. Serving (Standing)- External Cues Even elite athletes are rarely fully aware of what their bodies are doing in a moment of athletic action. Use external (focused on something other than the body), as opposed to internal (ie. "elbow high, shoulder back"), cues to help athletes serve better.LIFT- Lift the ball to where you can hit it hard (higher than head, in front of hitting shoulder). The term 'toss' implies higher elevation, which may result in more ball tracking and greater contact variance. Using the term 'lift' suggests more control and less variability. SHIFT-...

Tip by Adam Evans in Tennessee. 30-Second Tempo DrillI use this drill to work on the tempo of my offense. The drill starts with all 6 players on the floor in their free ball defensive positions ready to transition to our offensive set. I put 30 seconds on the scoreboard so the girls can visually see how much time is on the clock throughout the duration of the drill.I stand on the opposite side of the net with the ball cart ready to throw in balls into play. Since this is strictly an offensive tempo drill, there is not a defense...

Tip by Denise Rose from Guilford, IN.Volley BaseballThis is my drill to work on converting serve receive to attacks, while working on more aggressive serves.Divide into 2 teams, can be 5 v 5, the serving team is trying to score runs, the defensive team is trying to get 3 outs.An out is achieved if they convert a serve receive pass into an attack. A free ball is a wash, any ball that is not returned is a point to a server. Serving errors are also counted as outs.Runs for the serving team are counted with every ball the serve receiving...

Tip by Tim Zaprzalka, Pomperaug HS in Southbury, CT. HORSE with Attackers - mark back corners with cones to create corner hitting zones, a hula hoop in mid court for tips or roll shots near the 10ft line, hard angle swing zone marked by cones on or slightly behind 10ft line (you can also add a zone down the line if you'd like). Hitting lines on one side, If a hitter hits a specific zone then all other hitters must hit that zone or they get a letter. Continue until all except one hitter spells out HORSE. You could do...

Tip by Kristin Burk, Paw Paw, MI. Backrow Attacking:When I work on backrow attacking one of the drills I like to do is place an empty ball cart on one side of the court. All players are on the opposite side of the court with a ball. Players need to toss to themselves and attack the ball from behind the 10 ft. line while also trying to aim at the empty cart. The object is to have a good attack and force the cart out of bounds. I play for time, number of contacts it takes or competition between groups...
