January 2026 Coaching Tip

Tip by Bryan Anderson in Bemidji, MN. Plus One- this is an activity that can be implemented in many different types of drills, typically I use it as a warm up drill. Set up similar to queens court: 3 players to a side and extra players lined up on the end line.  The drill is called plus one because the number of contacts the side gets increases by one as the ball crosses the net. The fist in one one, second is two, etc. after the count gets to 5 contacts, the count resets at one- which catches a lot...

Tip by Scot Stacey in Honeyville, UT.  I have a fun thing. I posted this on my Instagram account and it took off. I have what we call a 'Mine lap'. If the kids get to the point where they aren't talking in a drill, we run a mine lap. They all go to one corner of the gym and jog around the gym. As they run they are to say 'mine' over and over as they run until they are done. It is slightly embarrassing so a warning sometimes is all it needs. Check out Scot’s Instagram video with...

Tip by Jen Hernandez in Escondido, California.  "Mistake" is what we call this drill. This is a fast pace drill with continuous play. And lots of touches on the ball.6 v 6 with players in their normal positions. Play starts with coach initiating the ball. From there the ball is constantly live. If a player makes a mistake (hits in the net, misses the dig, hits out, misses the block so ball falls on own side/blocks out, miss sets, doesn't cover block/hitter resulting in ball hitting the ground, etc. ) they immediately get another ball tossed at them by the...

Tip by Matt Barkley, Post Falls, ID. 4 Ball Passing Drill - We use this drill everyday, with everyone passing and serving. Set Up: Split the court down the middle with two passers, two servers, one shagger and one target on each side of the net. Servers will serve for two minutes to the passer down the line across from them. Targets will have an extra cart near them or quickly get the ball back to a shagger so the servers don't run out of balls. At the end of two minutes everyone rotates clockwise on their side of the...

Tip by Jennifer Woodall, Novato, CA. Drill: I separate my team into 3 groups - Servers, Defense, and Serve Receive. Goal - be the first to ten (you can make your goal what you want - sometimes I do time, and whoever has the most points wins the round). Servers earn points by aces. Serve Receive ( you can do this two ways - earn points by passes or I am working on First Ball kills). Serve Receive earns a point for first ball kills, and defense earns a point by stopping the first ball kill. If defense stops the...
