Drill by Jodie McCartney, Kiski Area School District in Vandergrift, PA. This is a serve receive drill that can be used in practice, or as a warm up for serving in a game. Split team into 4 groups, two groups on serving line, two groups serve receiving. Both sides serve at the same time, receivers have to get a pass that could be set to a hitter on the court (front row or back row). They have 2 minutes to get 10 passes total (both sides count together). If they pass a ball over the net, or a ball...

Tip is by Katie Clark in Hazelton, ID. Tyler's Drill This is a warm up 4 v 4 drill. 3 back row players and a setter. One side serves to the other side and they play it out. The three players have to play back row but can hit front row. The setter is the only blocker. The team who wins either stays on the winner side or moves to the winner side and 4 more people come on. The game is always started with a serve. If the server misses their serve, they go to the end of...

Tip by Alicia Dawn Stewart, Carthage HS in Carthage, TX. Reverse 6s This game can be used as a fun warmup. It's called Reverse 6s because your backrow DS/L are playing front row, and your Front Line is playing back row. Coaches determine who plays what positions at the beginning Ex ( Liberos are middles, Middles are setters, OH are Defensive Specialists, Setters are Liberos) Coach initiates the rally with a freeball and the teams play it out. If you happen to end up with a hitter on the front row, then they are not allowed to jump to attack....

Tip by Amanda Mullen, Pitt United Volleyball. 2 Minutes to Win It - Terminating Free Down BallsIn this 6 vs 6 drill, one team receives as many free and down balls as the time allows. The responsibility of the “receiving team” is to terminate the ball entirely to receive a point. Sequence from coach is ALWAYS - free, free, down. It’s nice to change up the pace from the coach and add some topspin to your receiving team. We incorporate a few rules into this towards point scoring to ensure the team stays focused and goes hard which includes the...

Tip is by Coach Esther Witte in Mitchell, SD. Hi! I always need fun names for volleyball drills so I can remember them. This one is called Meatloaf. (Meatloaf has really mixed up ingredients). This is a great warm up drill. Split your practice squad into two groups with one setter for each team. The setter always stays at the net. Two players start in the back row for each side. The other teammates are in two lines on the end line. The coach enters a ball to one side with a down ball, free ball, chase, tip, or dig...
