October 2024 Coaching Tip

Tip by Steve Stapay in Gilberts, IL.

Sometimes you need to give the players their "soap box" moment. While this is not a physical attribute, the mental side of volleyball is just as or even more important. Give the players a chance to get things off their chest--tell their teammates what they are thinking both positively and critically.

If it is criticism, the players have to know it is constructive criticism for the entire team. Do not call out teammates individually (unless it is positive comment), or there will be reciprocating effects. Use a block, a sturdy chair, the bleachers, or anything that they can stand on and voice their opinion.

You'll be amazed what comes out of it, and it will galvanize the team more once other players hear another player's point of view.

  • The only way to teach players on how you want them to do a drill is to physically show them what you expect from them. Being an older in years coach it can be difficult to teach tis advice. You just need to do the “show and tell” to benefit the player even if it is going to hurt later.
Young teams sometimes have not been taught the mechanics of diving, moving, passing, hitting, or even serving, show them every step you expect from them. Lead by example.
