September 2024 Coaching Tip

Tip by Scott Reslow, Wheaton College.

This drill/tip is about working on out of system play. Coaches often are so focused on passing well (rightfully so) and in system offense, that they neglect out of system play. Considering that most teams will likely be out of system 50% of the time, it's crucial that it gets worked on almost every day in the practice gym.

A nice 6 v 6 drill that utilizes this is a game we call STP Scrim. Here, you have a ball cart and a coach off the court but right behind pos. 6, with the team closest to the coach facing him or her. The team across the net is on defense and ready to play (in my gym the blockers are sending three no matter where it's set). The middle on the offense team is taking first ball, to start the drill, from the coach who hits a down ball at him. 90% of the time that middle digging with his back to the net is going to dig the ball into the backcourt...one of the back row players sets the pin and away the rally goes. We go five times per side and sometimes play all the way to 25. It practices out of system, high ball attacking, triple blocking (if desired), communication, covering, etc.
