Tip by Jamey Spartz in Arizona.
To work on all skills in a warm up drill, I came up with a drill called
2v2 Serve-to-Cover Rotation Drill
Serve, Serve Receive, Set, Dig, Dig, Tip!
Setup
4 players total: A & C on one side, B & D on the other
One ball
No blockers; controlled downballs and tips
Drill Sequence
-Player A serves to Player B.
-After serving, Player A runs under the net.
-Player B serve-receives to Player A, who sets after going under the net.
-Player B downballs back to Player A.
-Player A turns to Player C.
-Player C downballs to Player A.
-Player A digs to Player C.
-Player C tips the ball back.
-Player A covers the tip, running toward Player C.
Rotation
-Player B now serves to Player C.
-Player B runs under the net after serving.
-Player C serve-receives to Player B, who sets.
-Player C downballs to Player B.
-Player B turns to Player D.
-Player D downballs to Player B.
-Player B digs to Player D.
-Player D tips for Player B to cover.
➡️ Repeat the cycle, starting next with Player C, then Player D.
Coaching Focus
-Serve-receive accuracy
-Setter footwork under the net
-Platform control on digs
-Reading attacker → dig → quick cover
-Transition speed & communication
Key cues
“Beat the ball under the net”
“Dig high, cover fast”
Call “tip!”
Great warm up, communication, ball control, and focusing on all skills. You can challenge each group to see who has the most completed cycle without lost of control. This drill become more and more competitive as they learn to handle ball control and working on target hitting to teammates.
