September 2025 Coaching Tip

Tip by Jennifer Woodall, Novato, CA.

Drill: I separate my team into 3 groups - Servers, Defense, and Serve Receive. Goal - be the first to ten (you can make your goal what you want - sometimes I do time, and whoever has the most points wins the round). Servers earn points by aces. Serve Receive ( you can do this two ways - earn points by passes or I am working on First Ball kills). Serve Receive earns a point for first ball kills, and defense earns a point by stopping the first ball kill. If defense stops the first ball kill, they play out the rally, and the team that wins the rally earns a point. So defense could earn two points each time. This is a great drill for game situational pressure.

  • HI-
I spilt my team out equally.
I remove my two setters and have the set on each side of the net
I normally have between 3-4 per group.
If I have 3 in a group – They have to hit backrow
If I have 4 in a group – three back row and one as a pin

  • This drill sounds great. How many players do you have in each group? Just curious if you have all 6 on the court for serve receive or just 3 with a setter and hitter.
